Neuromuscular Stimulation

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NEMS) and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) are modalities used by our physical therapists that transmit electrical impulses, causing a stimulation to motor or sensory nerves through pads placed over the skin over a particular area of the body. The NEMS impulses cause the stimulation of the nerves communicating with muscles and cause them to contract. This treatment is often used to retrain muscles.

A TENS device is often used for pain control by stimulating smaller sensory nerves that block pain from reaching higher in the nervous system. Our physical therapy experts will evaluate your condition and determine if neuromuscular stimulation is right for your condition.
